Chapter 1: The Joy of Discovery
‘Our life is shaped by our mind; we become what we think.’, Gautama Buddha
A brief excerpt from the opening chapter.
It has been about five years since I first met Michael. It was early autumn, and Melissa and I had joined friends for a weekend at a mountain retreat. We met him the morning he arrived and invited him to join our group. As the weekend unfolded, we were glad we did. His wit and charm were refreshing, and his relaxed demeanour put everyone at ease. What struck me most was his sense of calm. Michael was different, his peacefulness set him apart from anyone I’d ever known. He never seemed ruffled, no task too daunting. I wanted to get to know him better, as his understanding of life’s subtleties far surpassed my own.
The weather was perfect. Each day, the sky appeared bluer, more reminiscent of spring than autumn. If not for the trees shedding leaves and the chilly nights, one might have believed the seasons had shifted. The guest house was warm and inviting, and we gathered in the lounge each evening, where a fire crackled in the open hearth. The scent of wood smoke filled the air, and the soft glow of the flames wrapped the room in gentle warmth, creating a cosy atmosphere which relaxed us all.
Michael never seemed intentional in anything he did, yet he found himself at the centre of our group. This man and his words captivated most of us, and we naturally directed many questions towards him. He answered each one in a firm, quiet manner as if such conversations were second nature to him.
I’ve always lived my life intending to wring every drop of pleasure from each experience. I never considered my actions could ripple into the future or shape events yet to unfold. Yet, I was to learn, every action has a consequence, in the present, and in the unseen future as well. Realisation, however, was still ahead of me.
In another era, society might have condemned my hedonistic approach but today’s values aren’t the same. My philosophy was simple, live each moment as it comes, and leave providence to handle the details.
Melissa enjoyed life as much as I did, and while our friendship was warm and fulfilling, we had no plans to become seriously involved. She had a carefree spirit, a ‘free soul,’ as she often called herself. A true career woman, her greatest pleasure came from acquiring property and material possessions. She moved at such a pace it left many breathless, as she knew how to make money and wasn’t afraid to spend it on whatever she wanted.
I’ve never been one to hold onto money; I spend it as quickly as I earn it. As long as I have money in the bank, a roof over my head and the freedom to live as I please, I’m content. An old saying says opposites attract, which described us. Melissa and I had been drifting in and out of each other’s life for some time, and we envisioned no reason to change. We enjoyed each other’s company, without strings attached, and the arrangement suited us perfectly.
Had it not been for Melissa, I never would have met Michael; quiet weekends in the country weren’t my style. But she thought it would be fun, especially since our companions were old friends we hadn’t seen in a while. Even though our lifestyles differed, she reasoned a break from our hectic schedules wouldn’t hurt, and she was right. The weekend turned out to be fantastic, and for me it set in motion a series of events which eventually led to me writing this book.
Unfortunately, the weekend ended all too quickly, and as often happens when old friends come together, we promised to do it again sometime. I was particularly eager to get Michael’s contact information, and he obliged, telling me with a smile our paths would cross sooner than I might expect. Maybe we would, I thought and pocketed his card.
Melissa and I said our goodbyes and began the drive back to the city. We discussed many things as we made our way through the night, but our conversation kept circling back to Michael and the lasting impression he had made.
